The Lincoln Legacy: Presidential Years

August 25 – December 17, 2006

Introduction and Overview

The unfilled promise of 1776 accused the nation in the years after the great Declaration of Independence. Equality. Opportunity. Liberty. Self-determination. Members of our society struggled to gain for themselves what the founders envisioned was the rightful possession of all. Abraham Lincoln lived in this world and then, as few others have been able, he transformed our world and our nation.

Such was his opportunity and perhaps his burden. In the midst of the nation’s challenges before 1861, Lincoln became a man capable of transforming the seemingly endless tragedy of the Great Rebellion into the fulfillment of promises made by past generations.

Steadfast in war, gracious in peace. Despite a life filled with sadness, Abraham Lincoln found within himself the confidence to imbue words and actions, with challenge and hope. We are shaped still by what he left to us.

Disclaimer

In the interests of truthfully presenting the nation’s experience of slavery, the cruelty of war and the reality of the president’s death, the curators of The Lincoln Legacy: Presidential Years have chosen to present the artifacts and images of the exhibition in an historic and thematic fashion.

The curators of this exhibition understand that some images as well as text may prove uncomfortable for some of our guests. We do not condone the concepts or the use of language once considered acceptable in days past.
